Hampta Pass Trek Best Time to Visit

Hampta Pass, a trek at a high altitude, can be completed in 6 months. The best time to do it would be between June-September. It can be extended to the end of October.

Some trekkers attempt to cross the mountains in May but find that the snow is too high to make it comfortable. The trek is different every month, even in the best months of June through September.

 

Hampta Pass in June

Nighttime: Will drop to temperatures between 1 deg C and 5 deg C.

Snow: Even though it is summer, snow patches are possible. It is snowbound, especially close to Balu Ka Ghera.

Expect a lot more snow in June from Balu Ka Ghera and beyond. You will find good snow from Balu Ka Ghera camp to the pass. Snow will fall even if you are not on the Lahaul side. Both sides have very deep snow.

What does each day look like?

Day 1: Reach Jobra

Jobra is the Basecamp for the Hampta Pass trek. The picturesque drive to Manali and 42 hairpin twists provide breathtaking panoramas from Kullu valley.

The Rani Nallah that you trek through until it disappears beneath the blue that covers the Hampta Pass starts accompanying you from this point. From the road head at Jobra, the campsite is a 30-minute trek through a forest mix of brilliant green maple trees and bright silver birch.

  • Time required approximately: 2 hours to Manali to Jobra 30 minutes trek to Jobra camping site. Reach Manali at least a day before

Take the road to leave the vehicle, and follow the narrow way to the forest. The forests are predominantly Pine with the occasional Maple tree, its newly lush green leaves, and an enjoyable change in vegetation.

It’s a smooth slope. Within 20 minutes of entering the forest, you’ll reach an incline with a massive rock that overlooks the meadow, littered with tiny stones.

 Day 2: Jobra to Jwara

  • Altitude: 9,379 feet (2,859 m) up to 11,194 feet (3,412 m)
  • Time took: 5 hours, 5 km.
  • Trek gradient: Easy-moderate. Easy walk up to Chika for around one hour, followed by two hours of ascent over the boulder section. It’s a descent of 1-1.5 hours before settling into a smooth walk.
  • Water sources: Bring enough liquids from Jobra. You can replenish your water bottles from the river on the way.

The meadow near Jobra includes Jobra’s Rani Nallah (also known as the Rani River running through it and on the other side, you’ll see hills with rocks.

Some sheep and cows can be seen grazing in the meadow, surrounded by Maple and Pine trees. At the beginning of the season, you may see some snow along the river banks.

You can walk across the meadow or climb the hill to the left. This makes the trail somewhat shorter. The river flows straight through the middle with water in no way a problem. You can stop for a rest in Chika.

Jwara is located to the left of Chika and is located by two visible waterfalls. Turn right, but remain on the left banks of the river all the way through. The initial climb is mostly through boulders and stones, and it’s never difficult.

The right bank is lined with small Rhododendrons in the middle and lower regions of the mountain, and birch trees are found at the top.

When you look back, you’ll see the Dhauladhar range with its snow-covered mountains. It’s a beautiful picture. There is a waterfall just to the left. Refresh and relax your water supply at this point.

After the waterfall, proceed to the right, towards the river with many boulders surrounding it. Remove your shoes and leap across the rocks along the Rani Nallah. The water is cold and icy, as one would think.

It is now halfway through your trek when you are entering the walled valley. The rocks are on the one end of the valley, and on the other side lies the water below. After crossing the river, you’re in Jwara, where nature is at its dramatic finest.

 Day 3: Trekking From Jwara up to Balu Ka Ghera

  • Altitude: 11,194 feet (3,412 meters) to 12,411 feet (3,783 m)
  • Time took: 4-5 hours, 4.5 km.
  • Trek gradient: Moderate. A short meadow stroll followed by the boulder section for about an hour before the trail was made of loose rocks throughout. A gradual climb throughout the day.
  • Water sources: Bring enough water. You’ll find streams on the trails for refilling the water bottle.

The river has snow streams melting and feeding it, while many mules and sheep graze on the green grass. In front of them are mountains covered in snow? To the rear, where will you find Hampta Pass?

Explore the Rani river, which flows into the rectangular valley. Along the way, you’ll find numerous tiny flowers like pink, yellow, purple, etc. The trees are gone to their own devices, and there won’t be any more for quite a while. It takes around 30 minutes to traverse the valley.

There is the day that passes through a flattish landscape that is in the midst of flowers. There are large and pink distorted marigolds and blue poppies. The Rani Nallah is flowing on the left. The climb is gradual, giving you time to take your time and contemplate during this area.

Once you have left Jwara, after which you must proceed further, the terrain becomes flat when you get to Chota Balu ka Ghera where you can relax for a while and enjoy an enlightening snack. Continue on the river, crossing tiny snow flows and leaping across the rocks.

At the final stretch, the rocks become separated, and jumping over becomes difficult. After a while, you’ll arrive at the final destination of the day, the Balu Ka Ghera or the bed of sand. The ground is created by dust and sand brought into the water.

It’s level ground, and to your left are the mountains you’ll trek through the following day to traverse that Hampta Pass. Set up your tent and take in the stunning sunsets behind the Hanuman Tibba summit. The summit is 12,500 feet over sea level.

Day 4 Balu Ka Ghera to Shea Goru via Hampta Pass

  • Altitude: 12,411 feet (3,921 m) to 12,864 feet (3,735 meters) via 14,065 feet (4,287 m)
  • Time took: 9 hours, 5 km.
  • Trek gradient: Moderate: One hour of gradual ascend follows when the trail gets difficult uphill until the pass, alternating with shorter descents, two hours of steep descents from the pass before easing off to a smooth walk.
  • Water sources Sources of water: None. Bring 2 liters of drinking water to Balu ka Ghera. The streams in the late season are likely to be flooded when melting snow.

The day’s trek can be split into two parts – the climb up to Hampta Pass, which is moderately steep, and then a steep descent down to Shea Goru.

It is suggested to take a reasonable break at the top of the pass to set a goal to get to the top by lunchtime, eat lunch at the top, and then begin the descent.

Your day begins by heading for the Mountains starting from Balu Ka Ghera. There is a chance to be pleasantly surprised by seeing a variety of tiny yellow and pink flowers blooming along the bank of the river.

Follow the river for about an hour, and you’ll reach its top. The trail could fade out at times, so be cautious not to lose track. Keep your group together.

After about an hour of a gradual climb in a falling zone, The climb then picks up. This is the very first slope you’ll face.

After about half an hour of the climb, you’ll be at the top of the hill. You will be able to view Deo Tibba peak right in front of you.

If you’re here in the summer months, there is an excellent chance that this entire region is covered with snow. Other times there are small spots of snow.

Breathe and wait for your group to catch up before starting the climb. It is a second incline with two stages that go along it and eventually end at the ridge.

The climb can take about 20-30 minutes. At the summit of this ridge, you’ll find another parallel one that is the next stop. Hampta Pass will be a sloping bend away from the summit of the second mountain.

After descending to the other side of the ridge, walk along one ridge for just a little distance, and you will be able to see a 360-degree panorama of the stunning mountain peak in the distance. This is a great location for panoramic shots.

After dropping down, after 15 minutes along the side, you start the vertical climb that will be completed in just 20 minutes. You might be sweating at the end, but you’re almost there at 14,000 feet, high atop Hampta Pass. Hampta Pass.

The descent can be a little more difficult in comparison to the climb, and it could vary a bit based on the conditions of the snow. A slide down is an option when there is snow. After the summit, make one turn to the right.

A U-turn will take you just beneath the pass. From here, it’s a straight downhill trek through the snow. You may also follow the zig-zag route until you reach that valley beneath.

Within an hour and a half, you’ll arrive at the bottom of the valley. Massive snow-covered mountains surround you on three sides. The open area leads into Shea Goru.

Shea Goru is a nearly easy walking distance from the summit. It’s a simple walk, though some might be tired after a long journey across the pass.

The river will be visible flowing again, this time towards your left. Pick a good campsite near the river and relax for the rest of the day after crossing through the Hampta Pass.

Day 5: Shea Goru, Chatru Drive to Chandratal*, and then return to Chatru

  • Altitude: 12,864 feet (3,735 meters) to 10,898 feet (3,322 m) up to 14,100 feet (4,298 m)
  • Time took: 4 – 4.5 hours; 6 km.
  • Trek gradient: Moderate: 2-2.5 hour walk on loose rocks with gentle inclines followed by a climb to Chatru over two glacial flows.
  • Water sources: Bring enough drinking water from the Shea Goru. There are several sources to fill up the water bottle.

The descent can be more difficult as you get closer to an open road. It is necessary to travel along the edges of rocks, and at times, it may be more convenient to descend into the bed of glaciers or river below to bypass the rocky area and return up.

Several areas have slippery soil. Therefore, you must be agile and jump over them to avoid sliding. This stretch would take approximately 2 1/2-3 hours once you’re away from the mountains.

The elevation is still an altitude, but you’ve got the road directly to the left, and the Chandra river is separating you from the road.

Two to three massive glacial streams flow down the mountains parallel to the Chandra river. You’ll have to traverse these rivers to get to a camping site surrounded by water.

Find a camping site near one of the streams that flow into the river. Chatru is a wonderful camping spot. There are beautiful views of the mountains. The Chandra River flows at high speed directly below.

When the road is clean and clear of snow, a trip to Chandratal Moon Lake is an absolute must when you’re in Spiti. Chatru is located about 70 kilometers from Chandratal, and it is possible to take a car from Chatru to Chandratal by way of Chatru.

The journey is about 3 hours. The route is bumpy and bumpy, so it is recommended that you begin the journey well before 3:00 pm. For those who suffer from motion sickness, make sure that you take Avomine tablets.

It is important to note that the route to Chandratal is extremely dusty and could cause problems in the case of asthma. If you’ve got some energy, take a walk up the hill next to Chandratal.

It is important to note that, as a portion of the Hampta Pass trek, you’ll not be camping at Chandratal. After a late afternoon and early evening excursion to Chandratal, You’ll return to Chatru and stay there for the night before making your way towards Manali the following day.

 

Day 6: Transfer to Chatru to Manali

After a briefing in the early morning after breakfast, say goodbye to you and the Spiti valley before heading towards Manali. The drive between Chatru to Manali traverses Rohtang Pass, which could take between 4 and 5 hours.

The safety of Hampta Pass Trek

The great thing is that this terrain on the Hampta Pass trek does not contain many areas that could pose an immediate safety risk. 1. Stream crossings along the route to Jwara

3. Stream crossings just before reaching Chhatru

The last day will include numerous stream crossings based on the month you plan to trek. There are glaciers that you can cross streams in summer and June, and the glaciers will melt and flow as cold streams in September and August.

In this case, we strongly suggest that you create a human chain, where you secure one of your elbows to another trekker before you connect. Make sure to keep going until the stream has crossed because of the cold you feel. The only way to get your feet warm is to cross over the river quickly by following a set of steps.

 

Security in Hampta Pass Trek – Altitude prudent

It is said that the Hampta pass trek begins at 9,000 feet and increases up to 14,000 feet on the third day. This is a high starting point that puts you at risk of altitude sickness during the initial days.

In this regard, We have designed the route so that it can reduce the possibility of developing AMS: The time spent at 9,300 feet at Jobra (with the shortest trek) instead of Manali’s 6,700 feet helps you adjust quite a lot.

The climb starting from Jwara towards Balu Ka Ghera is a less altitude climb – about 500 feet. This gives you ample time to rest and acclimatize before the long climb day.

The campsites are generally located within the normal altitude gain each day. When you travel at a steady pace, there is less chance of developing AMS.

But, there is the possibility of being struck by the AMS. In the eight years, we’ve been running this trek, We’ve observed that the trekkers typically begin showing symptoms of AMS around Balu Ka Ghera.

Most trekkers complain of fatigue or headache, which is often accompanied by maybe a lack of appetite or sleeping. If you’re trekking with us during the trek and especially near Balu Ka Ghera, inform your trek leader of your illness immediately if you experience any sign of AMS.

We trek leaders are certified to ensure your health and safety in emergencies with medical nature of any kind. If you suffer from AMS, early detection and treatment can guarantee the success of your trek.

If you’re trekking by yourself, the first step you should begin is to take a course of curative Diamox, which contains 250 mg every 12 hours, and then a long rest period. The earlier you begin treating these signs, the better the chance of recovery and finishing the trek.

If symptoms do not improve following treatment, it’s recommended to go to Jobra immediately. (if you haven’t yet crossed the pass). Don’t continue your trek if symptoms persist.

When you descend to the valley on the opposite side of your body, you may notice symptoms that haven’t adjusted to the elevation. If this happens, it is recommended to go down into Chatru immediately.

Security for Hampta Pass Trek – Weatherwise

The trek is safe throughout the four months to open, from June until September. There are some instances when you must be cautious.

The first time is during the season, in June. When there is a great deal of snow on the trail beginning in Balu Ka Ghera, the trail may be slippery. But, this can be handled with the right equipment like gaiters, microspikes, etc.

The forest department and we require these documents for legal purposes. You will not be permitted to trek if you do not have these documents.

  1. Original and photocopy of the government photo identification card.: Any driver’s license, Aadhar Card, or passport will suffice. The forest department will require this for identification purposes.
  2. Disclaimer certificate.:This is a legal requirement. Read the PDF carefully, then sign it. This must be given to the Trek Leader at registration at base camp.
  3. Medical certificate: This document has two sections. A practicing doctor must fill out the first section. You must complete the second section. The forest department won’t issue permits for your trek if you don’t have a medical certificate. We also require it.
